

The West Parry Sound OPP Detachment Board (WSPOPPDB) was established by the Province of Ontario through the Community Safety and Policing Act 2019 under O. Reg 135/24. This public safety board consists of 12 members representing 7 municipalities and 1 First Nation.
In addition to its legislated duties, the West Parry Sound OPP Detachment Board plays a crucial role in OPP governance, serving as a vital link between the community and the police. The board actively engages with community members to address their concerns regarding community safety and collaborates with the Detachment Commander or their designate to tackle these issues, thereby enhancing overall safety for the community.
One (1) member appointed by each member municipality and First Nation, who is a member of the council of the municipality or band council of the First Nation, will serve on the public safety board. This member will play a vital role in OPP governance, working to enhance community safety in collaboration with Parry Sound OPP and the OPP Detachment Boards. This structure results in a total of eight (8) members, all committed to promoting safety within the community.
Two (2) community members, jointly appointed by the municipalities and the First Nation mentioned above, will serve on the public safety board. These individuals are not members of the council or band council, nor employees of any of the municipalities or the First Nation, ensuring independent representation in OPP governance. Two (2) provincial citizen members appointed by the Minister of the Solicitor General will serve on the public safety board, playing a vital role in OPP governance and enhancing community safety efforts, particularly in the Parry Sound OPP region and among OPP Detachment Boards.
The Chair of the WSPOPPBD, which is crucial for OPP governance and community safety, is elected during the first meeting of each year through a vote by the Board. For 2025, Councillor Bonnie Keith, representing the Town of Parry Sound, has been chosen as the Chair. Her role ensures effective representation for the Parry Sound OPP and the public safety board.
At the first meeting of each year, the public safety board for the WSPOPPBD selects its Vice Chair by a vote of the Board. This board plays a vital role in OPP governance and community safety. For 2025, Councillor Tom Lundy, the Archipelago representative, has been chosen as Vice Chair. He is committed to improving public safety in collaboration with the Parry Sound OPP and the OPP Detachment Boards.
The member councils are in the final stages of recruiting two (2) community Board representatives for the remaining term of Council, which ends on October 26, 2026. These two Board positions offer an excellent opportunity for qualified residents to influence OPP governance and shape the objectives and priorities of the Parry Sound OPP Detachment. Their contributions will enhance community safety and play a crucial role in ensuring the security of all individuals and property within the community through effective public safety board initiatives.
The Minister of the Solicitor General plays a crucial role in enhancing community safety by recruiting, selecting, and appointing the two board representatives for the OPP Detachment Boards. Once appointed, these representatives will also take part in the public safety board, thus contributing to OPP governance and improving community safety in the Parry Sound OPP area.
